Peter edited BB since and most certainly knows a thing or two about boats, the people that build them and the bits that go into making them work. But I started work in the printing industry, working for a company that produced landing charts for all the major airlines. This was exceptionally interesting to a man who spent his early life building model aircraft, from those balsa wood rubber band powered models of Spitfires, through to diesel or glo-plug engined control line models. I never got around to radio control; that was far too expensive.
In the s and s, VR emerged again based on a different generation of hardware e. This reached the attention of the public, and VR was hailed by many engineers, scientists, celebrities, and business people as the beginning of a new era, when VR would soon change the world for the better. Scientists, engineers, and people working in industry carried on with their research and applications using and exploring different forms of VR, not knowing that actually the topic had already passed away.
The purpose of this article is to survey a range of VR applications where there is some evidence for, or at least debate about, its utility, mainly based on publications in peer-reviewed journals. Of course not every type of application has been covered, nor every scientific paper about , papers in Google Scholar:

Alexis Courcoux The 11th edition and 40th-anniversary staging of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe solo transatlantic race got underway in spectacular style today off the Brittany port of Saint Malo, as a record entry of skippers set sail for Guadeloupe. Conditions could not have been better for spectators and sailors alike as the fleet revelled in 20 knots of breeze coming off the land on a beautiful Autumn afternoon.
After a very conservative start with no one wanting to be over the line early at the beginning of a 3, nautical mile course, the fastest boats quickly opened up the throttle. This is a sister ship of the small trimaran sailed by Canadian yachtsman Mike Birch when he won the inaugural Route du Rhum in Four years ago in this race, Peyron set a new outright record of seven days and 15 hours on the maxi trimaran Banque Populaire and the routing predictions for this race suggest that that benchmark could be lowered by as much as two days by the leading ULTIMES.
But before they can enjoy a fast ride to the Caribbean in the trade winds, all the sailors will have to face some very rough weather that is coming their way on Tuesday. The predictions are for big seas, knot winds gusting to 55 knots and a weather picture showing very unstable conditions for most of the rest of the week. It is thought that some of the skippers in the slower classes will decide to head for refuge in ports west and south of Saint Malo — like Roscoff or La Rochelle — and prefer to wait for the weather to ease, rather than risk damaging their boats early in the piece.
Race rules permit them to make a stop of this kind without penalty. In the build-up to the start the upcoming weather was the big talking point, especially for the slower classes who face a very rough time as they try to head west across the Bay of Biscay. That largely dictates if you go north or south. But personally, I am preparing to race to Guadeloupe. The option is there. I don’t want to start thinking about stopping and then continuing because then you are not ready for anything.

After being cruelly forced to retire from the last Transat Jacques Vabre just after they had taken the Class 40 lead, overhauling Aquarelle. Image licensed to Lloyd Images Ahead of the solo skippers and their boats lies one of the most daunting challenges in professional sport — the north Atlantic, complete with bitterly cold storm force headwinds, an ever-present adverse swell, freezing fog and even the danger of ice.
The fleet is divided into four classes, each of which will produce an official winner of The Transat bakerly. The fastest boats are the giant trimarans of the Ultime class, three of which are battling it out for line honours, with the first expected to reach the finish at New York in around eight days. The slowest boats will be the smaller monohulls of the strong Class40 fleet which should take around 15 days to complete the course, but in which we should see some of the tightest racing.
Peyron is expecting to take around 27 days to reach the finish at New York. Several skippers were caught out by the lighter-than-forecast conditions at the start and were hastily shaking out reefs as those with full mainsails took advantage. The foilers may well be quicker but will they be tough enough to last this toughest of courses? I want to do well and I am just thinking through all the things I must not forget and the mistakes to avoid.
Like all the skippers, Tripon was eyeing the forecast and trying to assess his routing choices, whether to head north or south once clear of the southern Irish coast. I am delighted to see this hugely competitive fleet of sailors on state-of the art racing machinery now taking on The Transat bakerly and we wish them all the best for the undoubted challenges that lie ahead.

Vincent Olivaud The ninth day at sea in the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe solo transatlantic race saw the second capsize in this 11th edition of the four-yearly classic when a 50ft trimaran flipped over about 1, nautical miles east of Guadeloupe. The first capsize came at the end of day two of the 3, nautical mile race a week ago when one of the biggest yachts in the strong fleet, Banque Populaire IX, turned over after a major structural failure in a gale midway between the coast of Spain and the Azores.
This time the yacht going upside down is the Multi50 class trimaran Arkema skippered by Lalou Roucayrol, another French sailor who is based near Bordeaux. Roucayrol is one of the most experienced solo offshore racers in big multihulls and was competing in his fourth Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe. He did not have time to stop his yacht tipping over but was able to keep safe within the main hull.

This weeks issue is about Barging. It looks like that I need more than one week to write this up, so next week I’ll continue. What is most obvious when reading that list, is that “barging” is associated with rude behaviour, to barge in when not appropriate, aggressively and clumsily.
In short; a foul nobody wants to make Barging in sailing happens very early in the race, before the starting signal and is mostly done either by boats who have no clue about the rules or are especially inapt in timing there approach to the start. But wait, it is also done by people who think they can get away with it, because if successful, it has potentially great benefits.

Er wordt in ‘juryland’ druk gespeculeerd over de oorzaak van deze teruggang. Zijn er minder incidenten op het water?
Worden er vaker strafrondjes gedraaid als er dan iets is gebeurd? Of vertrouwen zeilers niet dat de uitkomst van een ingediend protest in hun voordeel zal uitvallen? Vergelijk het maar met een rechtbank, waar een openbare aanklager een zaak komt presenteren en een advocaat de beschuldigde partij komt verdedigen. En de rechter luistert naar beide partijen – stelt misschien een aantal vragen – en vormt een oordeel.
De openbare aanklager vertegenwoordigt de benadeelde partij. Dat is bij een protestbehandeling de persoon die de boot vertegenwoordigd die het protest heeft ingediend.
